Last month, the day before our lives were forever changed, my sweet husband had his 30th birthday!! Ben isn't a very big birthday fan. He doesn't need big parties or lots of attention. I, on the other hand, think birthdays should be celebrated as your very own special day to eat and do and say whatever the world you want. It's your day!! His 30th fell on a Tuesday and I knew we couldn't properly celebrate on a Tuesday. Plus, I was 10 months pregnant making the options of awesome things to do fewer. I would have loved to take Ben somewhere warm to lay on the beach and drink pina coladas. For some reason they frown upon women who are about to give birth travelling to these awesome places. So, we did the next best thing - a SURPRISE PARTY!
If you know Ben, you know this is not his ideal way of celebrating, but I wanted him to know how loved he is. I wanted him to have a celebration, just for him, before our baby arrived. I wanted him to be celebrated, his 30 years to be appreciated, and for him to know just how much I love him. So in spite of how much I knew he would want to kill me for throwing him a surprise party, I planned it anyway! Our friends Grant and Nicole have some amazing property in Ridgefield with an awesome empty barn. They threw lots of good ideas my way and offered to have the party at their place, the barn was the perfect spot! Since I knew a party with Ben as the main act wasn't fully his cup of tea, I also wanted him to do something he would really enjoy. Since my options were limited we planned a paintball Saturday for Ben and all the guys. This gave me time to set up for the surprise party that night and gave Ben a full day to act like a crazy guy shooting paint at people and having fun with the guys.
They had a blast! They told stories for hours and got home so late that I was worried they would miss the surprise party!
I had told Ben that evening we were going to a housewarming party at Grant and Nicole's. He now says his first hint that something was up was that I wasn't mad or annoyed when he was home so late making us late to the party. Haha - it's true!
When we arrived at the barn everyone was inside quietly waiting for us. I was supposed to laugh really loud as we approached the door. I didn't. I suddenly felt like laughing really loud for no good reason sounded crazy. When I pulled the door open we walked in and everyone yelled "HAPPY BIRTHDAY". Ben looked at me with a confused smile on his face! They were all there for him and let me be the one to tell you that he LOVED it!
What a fun and perfect surprise for my sweetheart's 30th birthday! He was truly surprised and it made me so happy that we were able to pull it off and have such a fabulous time. Thank you to everyone who helped out, we are lucky to have such great people in our lives.
Happy 30th birthday to the best husband, dad and man that I know. I am truly a lucky lady to have such a great man in my life. Love you Ben!!!
